Our Story
A journey from South Africa to the Yorkshire coast
Our Story
Hideaway at The House of Food was built on one idea: great food brings people together.
I’m Bernadette Phillips — a self-taught chef with South African roots and a love for bold, honest cooking. From childhood meals in the garden to travelling through South Africa and Southeast Asia with my children, food has always been my way of celebrating life and culture.
Hideaway has grown into a vibrant, family-run spot serving fresh, seasonal dishes with South African soul and Yorkshire ingredients. Everything is made from scratch, cooked with intention, and when it’s gone, it’s gone.
We’re here for the community of locals, families, friends, travellers, and anyone who loves real food served with heart and energy.
Flavourful, welcoming, and full of soul, that’s Hideaway.
Our Commitment to Sustainability
Local Sourcing
We partner with Yorkshire farmers and to source the freshest ingredients. Our meat comes from ethical farms within a 60 mile radius, ensuring quality and reducing our carbon footprint. By supporting local producers, we help sustain the regional economy while providing our guests with the best flavors the Yorkshire coast has to offer.
Waste Reduction
Our menu is carefully designed to minimize food waste. We practice nose-to-tail cooking, utilizing every part of our ingredients to create delicious dishes while reducing what goes to landfill. We've implemented a comprehensive composting program and use biodegradable packaging for any takeaway orders.
Energy Efficiency
Our restaurant operates with energy-efficient appliances and lighting throughout. We've invested in renewable energy sources to power our kitchen and dining areas. Through careful monitoring and sustainable practices, we're continuously working to reduce our environmental impact while providing an exceptional dining experience.
